I keep a mental list of interactive libraries that I’m just waiting for an excuse to use. For several years, that register included Sketch.js, which enables MS Paint-style drawing in the browser.
When an editor flagged this research paper about drawing corporate logos from memory, it was a perfect fit. Implementing the library on a blank canvas to allow readers to simulate the exercise took about 10 minutes.
Writing the scoring algorithm from scratch took about four hours to reach a point where I could recruit colleagues to test it. And then another two to refine it based on nonsensical grades–not including the 15 minutes I spent apologizing to alpha testers who wanted to litigate said grades…
